20 MW power supply with HGY generator sets for the capacity market in the United Kingdom

Power balancing in the electrical power system using HIMOINSA HGY generator sets

HIMOINSA, an international leader in the design and manufacture of power technology solutions and part of Yanmar Energy Systems, is supplying ten HGY Series generator sets with a total critical power output of 20 MW, ensuring a reliable power supply with a reduced carbon footprint.

The project, carried out for the capacity market in the United Kingdom, required generator sets that are ready to deliver power at any moment. The ten installed units operate in synchronisation with each other and with the grid, under the supervision of an intelligent control system that ensures stable and safe operation under all conditions. Real-time remote monitoring, combined with communication redundancy and constant power export, makes it possible to maintain an uninterrupted flow of electricity.

The project based on the HGY Series is an important step in terms of sustainability, efficiency and reliability. It combines the most advanced technological solutions, such as HIMOINSA generator sets with Yanmar YG engines operating exclusively on HVO100 fuel. As a result, the power plant guarantees NOx emissions below 190 mg/Nm³, reducing them to a minimum thanks to the SCR system, while also delivering very high power output obtained from 1 litre of engine displacement.

As Clive Dix, Managing Director of HIMOINSA Power Solutions, points out, HIMOINSA has already supplied solutions for the capacity market in the United Kingdom, based on both diesel and gas generator sets. In this project, however, special emphasis was placed on the maximum performance and efficiency of HGY generator sets with Yanmar engines, which offer very high power output obtained from 1 litre of engine displacement. This is a complete solution designed using the latest technologies, guaranteeing low emissions, high performance and the operating parameters required for mission-critical installations.

A sustainable solution and reduced carbon footprint

This is one of the modern installations in the United Kingdom operating on HVO100, equipped with advanced exhaust gas after-treatment systems and using this renewable fuel exclusively. HVO100 is a plant-based biofuel that significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to conventional diesel fuel, while maintaining stable and reliable performance in mission-critical applications.

The HGY Series has been designed to meet the most demanding environmental requirements, including the Mid Combustion Plant regulations adopted by DEFRA in the United Kingdom. These regulations apply to generation plants from 1 MW to 50 MW, especially those that may operate for more than 500 hours per year.

For exhaust gas treatment, the generator sets are equipped with a modern SCR – Selective Catalytic Reduction system. This solution involves injecting a urea solution into the hot exhaust gas flow, which triggers a chemical reaction that converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and water vapour – compounds that are harmless to the environment.

In addition, the SCR system used in the HGY Series is integrated with the engine’s electronic control unit, enabling real-time monitoring of parameters such as temperature, pressure and NOx concentration. This integration ensures full process control, reduces the risk of malfunctions and extends component life. As a result, NOx emissions remain below 190 mg/Nm³, positioning this installation among the most advanced sustainable power solutions in Europe.

The combination of the SCR system with the exclusive use of HVO100 fuel makes this power plant a benchmark example of a modern approach to energy generation. The installation not only meets the most stringent sustainability standards, but also offers very high efficiency in the use of the power unit, which means a lower carbon footprint, more efficient use of resources and a significant reduction in costs throughout the entire life cycle of the project.

Advanced acoustic engineering

The project required an advanced acoustic solution. The HGY Series uses modern acoustic engineering technologies, making it possible to achieve sound attenuation levels of 80 dB(A) at maximum output. This flexibility allows the installation to be adapted to the strict acoustic requirements in force in the United Kingdom, limiting its impact on the surroundings and meeting high environmental standards.

Each generator set was designed using acoustic panels of varying densities installed on the walls, ceiling and floor. Mineral wool and specialised foams were used to effectively absorb sound waves. In addition, integrated exhaust silencers provide noise reduction in the range of 30 to 45 dB, maintaining low sound emission levels even when operating under high load.

HIMOINSA, in cooperation with its acoustic engineering team, developed a solution complemented by optimised airflow, managed through a dual-module ventilation system and self-regulating remote cooling. The system adjusts airflow intensity to current thermal requirements. This design not only guarantees high heat dissipation efficiency, but also reduces noise generated by air movement and auxiliary power consumption. As a result, the installation can operate intensively in an urban environment while maintaining reliable power supply and compliance with high environmental standards.

In addition, the ECU uses intuitive diagnostic software that supports remote monitoring and predictive maintenance. This facilitates comprehensive management of the installation and increases its operational availability. The combination of technological innovation and mechanical robustness makes Yanmar engines the foundation of reliability for this 20 MW project.

24/7 connectivity and control

The 20 MW project, configured with ten synchronised and continuously monitored generator sets, guarantees a stable, safe and uninterrupted power supply. Advanced connectivity strengthens the installation’s ability to operate under constant load and ensures continuity of operation even in the most demanding conditions.
