STAGE V – S5: What Is It? What Is the STAGE 5 Exhaust Emissions Standard and When Should It Be Used?
What Should You Know About Stage V?
A few years ago, the European Union set the primary goal of reducing gaseous and particulate pollutant emissions to improve air quality. Since early 2019, Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 has applied across Europe, prompting rental companies to modernize fleets by deploying equipment with engines compliant with the Stage V standard. Stage V-compliant generating sets help protect the environment by significantly reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and by controlling particulate matter (PM) and particle number (PN).
NRMM: What Is It and What Does It Mean?
NRMM stands for Non-Road Mobile Machinery—a broad category of equipment typically used off-road. Depending on context, it may be described as “non-road mobile machinery” or “off-road mobile machinery”.
According to the official EU website, NRMM covers a wide range of machinery used off-road, including:
- small garden and handheld equipment (lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc.)
- construction machinery (excavators, loaders, bulldozers, etc.)
- agricultural machinery (combine harvesters, cultivators, etc.)
- railcars, locomotives and inland waterway vessels

In practice, this category also includes generating sets installed on trailers, semi-trailers, platforms, cranes, refrigeration units, railcars and other vehicles—producing power for their own needs or for other equipment. In other words: mobile generator sets designed to be moved between job sites.
Emission-related requirements for NRMM equipment
STAGE V: Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 sets the permissible limits for gaseous and particulate emissions from internal combustion engines installed in non-road mobile machinery (NRMM).
RoHS2: Restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) to help protect human health and the environment, including environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste EEE. Restricted substances and maximum concentrations (by weight in homogeneous materials):
- Lead (0.1%)
- Mercury (0.1%)
- Cadmium (0.01%)
- Hexavalent chromium (0.1%)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1%)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1%)
HIMOINSA and Stage V
As a leader in the power generation sector, HIMOINSA is committed to environmental responsibility. HIMOINSA offers a full range of diesel- and gas-powered generating sets, as well as lighting towers with engines compliant with the Stage V standard. Additionally, to limit the use of polluting substances in electrical and electronic equipment on the European market, our generators comply with the RoHS2 Directive 2011/65/EU.
To meet Stage V requirements, HIMOINSA has designed generating sets with Yanmar, FPT Iveco and Scania engines. They feature a new exhaust aftertreatment system to ensure emissions reduction in line with Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 for NRMM. This represents a major technological leap—delivering up to a 90% reduction in harmful emissions compared to previous solutions.
With a wide PRP power range from 9 to 550 kVA, the Stage V series was designed with maintenance, durability, fuel consumption and total cost of ownership in mind—making it one of the most competitive choices on the European generator rental market. One of the key elements is the control system, engineered to ensure safe and efficient coordination with modern Stage V engines managed by advanced electronics.
These newly designed, compact generating sets integrate all emission-reduction systems together with the AdBlue tank within a robust and functional enclosure. The new series features a high-strength, fully reinforced base frame with double protection at forklift access points. The spill containment tray is designed to capture 100% of operating fluids in the event of a failure.
Service and Maintenance Access
To simplify servicing and maintenance, the Stage V series includes:
- Hinged doors providing access to the exhaust aftertreatment system and easy access to the radiator for quick cleaning.
- Wider doors for improved access to all engine and alternator components for fast, correct servicing.
- Service intervals every 500 hours.
- Drain valves to facilitate radiator cleaning. S5 units with FPT and Scania engines include low coolant level sensors to prevent overheating and extend engine life.
- An internal fuel tank designed to reduce theft risk and prevent accidental spillage during loading.
Explore our comprehensive range of generating sets that meet the Stage V exhaust emissions standard. These are advanced units, so operation by trained personnel is essential. All service work should be carried out by experienced technicians with the appropriate skills and expertise. When you purchase a HIMOINSA Stage V generator from us, you have the confidence that all conditions for reliable, trouble-free operation will be met.
